Going beyond the man-games lost numbers, my IIT metric (Injury Impact to Team) attempts to quality-adjust the injuries to the players. As people frequently point out, losing a top line centre to injury is not the same as losing a 4th liner. Thus, the genesis of the IIT metric in 2011.
Below are the man-games lost totals and IIT metrics for all NHL games completed up to November 24, 2015.
Summary: The Detroit Red Wings and St. Louis Blues hold playoff spots despite the fact that they are among the most injured teams this season.
In addition to my team data (Table 1) I provide individual skater (Table 2) and goalie (Table 3) data.

What Do The Numbers Say?
- The Buffalo Sabres (90), Detroit Red Wings (89) and St. Louis Blues (79) have suffered the most man-games lost to injury. The New York Rangers (6), Washington Capitals (9) and Nashville Predators (19) are the least injured teams. See Table 1 below for more rankings.
- Edmonton (1st) and Detroit (2nd) face the greatest cumulative impact of injured forwards or defensemen by the IIT-skater metric. The Kings and Rangers have faced the least impact due to injuries.
- On the other hand, the St. Louis Blues are most affected by injuries by IIT-cfrel. The Blues are 3rd in team man-games lost with 79 and are missing multiple, high CFrel% players.
- The top IIT-skater value for a defenseman is Duncan Keith who missed 10 games due to injury. T.J. Brodie has 9 games missed to injury which rank him second in IIT-skater. See Table 2 below for more skater rankings.
- For forwards, Evander Kane‘s 10 games injured leads all IIT-skater metrics for forwards. Aleksander Barkov is the next highest forward. So, as a function of the number of games they’re injured, how many games their team has played, and their average time on ice, these players are considered the greatest loss to their teams.
- For IIT-cfrel, Cedric Paquette and Jaden Schwartz represent the greatest loss of CFrel% value based on the number of games they’ve been injured, and the number of games their team has played.
- For goalies, Jacob Markstrom and his 13 man-games lost place him first in IIT-goalie, impact to a team due to injury to a goalie. See Table 3 below for more goalie rankings.
