Today’s Summary: The Detroit Red Wings and New Jersey Devils hold playoff spots despite the fact that they are among the most injured teams this season. On the other end of the scale, the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers are the least injured teams in the league.

Below are the man-games lost totals and IIT metrics for all NHL games completed up to December 17, 2015. In addition to my team data (Table 1) I provide individual skater (Table 2) and goalie (Table 3) data. See my Frequently Asked Questions for more info.

What Do The Numbers Say?

  1. The Buffalo Sabres (141), Edmonton Oilers (127) and Detroit Red Wings (119) have suffered the most man-games lost to injury. The New York Rangers (22) and Washington Capitals (34) are the least injured teams. See Table 1 below for more rankings.
  2. Edmonton (1st) and Buffalo (2nd) face the greatest cumulative impact of injured forwards or defensemen by the IIT-skater metric. The Winnipeg Jets and Los Angeles Kings have faced the least impact due to injuries.
  3. On the other hand, the St. Louis Blues are most affected by injuries by IIT-cfrel. The Blues are 6th in team man-games lost with 104 and have had injuries to multiple, high CFrel% players.
  4. The top IIT-skater value for a defenseman is Duncan Keith who missed 10 games due to injury. Mark Streit (15 games) and Zach Bogosian (17 games missed to injury) are 2nd and 3rd in IIT-skater. See Table 2 below for more skater rankings.
  5. For forwards, Paul Stastny‘s 15 games injured leads all IIT-skater metrics for forwards. Pavel Datsyuk is the next highest forward. So, as a function of the number of games they’re injured, how many games their team has played, and their average time on ice, these players are considered the greatest loss to their teams.
  6. For IIT-cfrel, Pavel Datsyuk and Paul Stastny represent the greatest loss of CFrel% value based on the number of games they’ve been injured, and the number of games their team has played.
  7. For goalies, Andrew Hammond and his 17 man-games lost place him first in IIT-goalie, impact to a team due to injury to a goalie. Carey Price is 2nd and closing fast. See Table 3 below for more goalie rankings.

Man-Games Lost to Injury vs Team Points plot. Bottom Right = BAD, Top Left = GOOD, Bottom Left = fewer injuries, fewer wins, Top Right = more injuries, more wins. Bubble size indicates IIT-skater metric (quality of players lost).
